Unai Emery handed big boost in signing Aaron Ramsey replacement in January

After eleven years as agunner Aaron Ramsey does not seem so irreplaceable . Arsenal boss Unai Emery wants Villarreal midfielder Pablo Fornals. The 22-year-old is seen as a possible replacement for Aaron Ramsey at the Emirates, with the Wales international set to leave at the end of the season.

And according to Spanish newspaper Sport, Fornals could be tempted to quit Villarreal for Arsenal in January.

They say the midfielder is happy in La Liga, however, a club of Arsenal’s size would be tough to turn down.

Sport add that Villarreal are desperate to keep hold of their star man in the January transfer window.

The Spanish side are set to offer Fornals a bumper new deal to fend off interest from the Premier League.

Sport say Fornals’ buy-out clause in his current contract is £36m (€40m), despite reports claiming it was below half of that fee.

Spain international Fornals has netted three goals and chipped in with two assists in all competitions this season for Villarreal.

Arsenal’s director of football Raul Sanllehi has been vocal on the Gunners’ transfer plans, revealing Emery will be backed if the right deal is available.

He said: “If there is a very good opportunity we are definitely going to consider, we will see. Danny Welbeck’s injury alters, in a way, the views.

“It’s a good time to start analysing what options we have in the market. We are not closing the door but it’s still not the preferred one.

“I am not saying that’s a green light to go to the market but we have good players in the house also that may get further opportunities, like Eddie Nketiah for example.”

Gunners legend Ray Parlour recently toldExpress Sportthat Emery is already making plans ahead of the January window, adding a centre-back would be his ideal signing.

He said: “I’m sure they’ll be positions he wants to. For me centre-half he could probably strengthen.

“But he’s got [Laurent] Koscielny coming back, they’ve missed him.

“He’s a little bit older but I’m sure he’s working hard to get back in the side so I think he’ll assess the situation when it comes to January. He’ll be lining people up anyway.”

Arsenal are back in action on Sunday afternoon against Bournemouth in the Premier League.
