City tycoon behind expired diaper saga arrested!

City tycoon who was arrested by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives on Thursday suspected to have imported and repackaged expired baby diapers set to be arraigned in court today.

Businessman Mukhtar Rehemtulla Omar was arrested and taken to Parklands Police Station.

According to the police, Omar will face three charges of importation and sale of substandard baby diapers branded Ezee.

He will also be charged with attempting to sell the substandard diapers without a valid Import Standardization Mark (IS-Mark) or a permit issued by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS.)

The arrest comes barely a month after the detectives nabbed five tonnes of expired diapers at Eens go-down in Mlolongo.

The Ezee pampers brand packaged in bails comprising of small,medium and large pampers which had already been repackaged  ready for sale  expired on February this year and the dates had been erased.

According to the police, the owner of the diapers had hired workers to stick fake Kenya Bureau of Standards (KBS) stamps on the diapers.

The Ezee branded diapers from China which had been distributed for some time by the criminals, had expired in February 2018. They were estimated to weigh 4 tonnes and were worth an estimate of KSh 30 million .

The workers had also erased expiry dates on the diapers, most of which had lasted beyond their sell-by dates.

The consignment was later taken back to the Director Criminal Investigations (DCI) offices in Nairobi under tight security.

Six workers were arrested during the raid.
