“Betrayal closer than the city!” Imam faces life in prison for molesting son

A new report has revealed shocking details on child sexual abuse in the country however most cases are not reported.

The report by the International Child Protection Conference 2018 indicates that, despite an 11-year-old law protecting children, they are still being sexually abused.

Malindi court has sentenced an imam in Malindi to life in prison after he who was found guilty of sexually assaulting his nine-year-old stepson and bought his silence with Ksh10.

Malindi Senior Principal Magistrate Sylvia Wewa said the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that the Madrassa teacher sodomised the minor on March 23, 2016.

Ms Wewa said the religious leader, 37, had betrayed the trust of stepson who looked upon him for care, love, shelter, food and education.

Earlier this month, Ms Wewa gave the prosecution two weeks to conduct a social audit of the accused before he is sentenced.

The convict, who has two similar cases in court, was given 14 days to appeal the sentence.

Mr Francis Auma, an official at Muslims for Human Rights (Muhuri), welcomed the verdict.

“Let this be a lesson to all children molesters,” he said in a statement adding, “having worked with the family over the years, Muhuri will continue to seek justice and ensure rule of law is followed to the latter”.

This comes after the police launched  manhunt of a Madrassa teacher in Ganze who is on the run after  impregnating a 15-year-old girl.

The Ustadh at Masjid Twakar in Kadzandani village allegedly defiled the girl who is his Madrassa pupil.

The girl is among pregnant girls who sat this year’s KCPE exam in Ganze Subcounty. Sources who spoke to the Standard said the Ustadh tried to make the girl have an abortion for the second time after the first attempt failed.
