Why Harry Kane will miss the armband, jersey 10 against USA

What are your greatest memories about Wayne Rooney’s career?

Wayne Rooney will be handed the armband and number 10 jersey in his final appearance for England against the United States on Thursday at Wembley Stadium.

Harry Kane, the current England skipper, who wears jersey NO 10 requested manager Gareth Southgate to hand Rooney the jersey he wore way back before he retired from international football. The DC United striker is set to be joined by his children during a pre-match guard of honour that will end with him collecting a memento from Football Association chairman Greg Clarke, before returning to the field in the second half as skipper.

Southgate confirmed he will give Rooney his favourite number, a guard of honour before kick-off and let him take the captain’s armband when he comes on as a substitute.

“Harry came to see me and said, ‘Look, we don’t think it would be right for him to come on wearing a shirt he hasn’t worn previously.’ Part of the game is to pay tribute to what he’s done. Players always look at how they would like to be treated in that situation,” said Southgate.

“There won’t be a No10 to start. I don’t think that would be allowed. One of the starters will wear 12-23, and Wayne will wear No10. The senior players discussed it. They’re the ones who are playing. And there’s no rulebook. Who decides? he added.
