Migori governor Okoth Obado, first made headlines after he was charged with the murder of his pregnant girlfriend Sharon Otieno and their unborn son.

Sharon’s mutilated body was found in a thicket in Kodera forest after being lured to abduction by Michael Oyamo, Obado’s aide.

Oyamo and another aide to the governor Caspal Obiero, were charged alongside Obado in the heinous murder. The 26 year old Rongo University student, was gang raped before being stabbed eight times.

After spending 34 days at the Industrial Area Remand Prison, Obado was released on a sh 5 million cash bail and two sureties of the same amount. His two other accomplices, Oyamo and Obiero were however not lucky as Justice Jessie Lessit denied them bail, on grounds that they might interfere with witnesses.

Obado was arrested again on Wednesday morning, over illegal possession of firearms and charged in a Kibera court.

It has since emerged that seven of the eight guns recovered from his Nairobi and Migori homes can be accounted for. The other one which cannot be accounted for belong to Caspal Obiero, who is rotting at Industrial Area Prison.

The governor was informed that he was under arrest because a pistol found in his Migori home was believed to be illegal or unregistered. Could this be Obiero’s gun?

Obiero is a licensed gun holder and had apparently taken the weapon to the home for safekeeping after he was arrested and charged alongside Michael Oyamo in September.

Either way, Obado may reunite with his two aides at the Industrial Area Police Station if the prosecution get their way. They’re currently demanding that he be detained for 15 days.

According to EACC detectives, the weapons were hidden under a mattress in Obado’s bedroom. Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti said the weapons would undergo ballistic tests.

“We want to know if the weapons have been used in any crime. After ballistic tests, we will know more and the way forward,” said Mr Kinoti.
