Echesa, Kaberia grilled for disregard of sportsmen

Sports CS Rashid Echesa & PS Kirimi Kaberia were on Thursday 15 November grilled by the Parliamentary Committee on stalled projects and disregard of different sports stakeholders.

Several sports project have been at a standstill one of them being the Nyayo Stadium which has been not us for the last one and half year. The 30,000 capacity facility has been closed for the works which were supposed to have been completed early this year for it to host the CHAN 2018.

However, lack of funding from the government stalled the project until recently when contractors returned on site to ensure it is ready for the Jamhuri Day celebrations on 12 December 2018. Due to unpreparedness, Kenya lost the rights to host CHAN and Morocco were have given then hosting rights.

The Rugby 15s team also struggled with funds ahead of repechage as well as the football team which was forced to play against Ethiopia (first leg) with having had a residential camp due lack of fans.

Recently the Amputee team that took part in World Cup in Mexico and finished 12th overall and second in Africa spent Thursday night at the Ministry of Sports headquarters’ boardroom after failing to get an audience with the minister waiting for their 2.2 Million cash to be paid.

On Tuesday, the team spent 18 hours at Frankfurt Airport without a meal as they journeyed back home from Guadalajara, Mexico, where they played their matches of the quadrennial tournament. Kenya lost 4-1 to Turkey and 4-1 to Russia before beating USA and Japan by the same 2-1 score line.
