Apopement: Pope appoints Philip Anyolo Archbishop of Kisumu

A few days after the funeral of the Late Archbishop Emeritus John Njenga, Pope Francis has today appointed the Bishop of Homa Bay Philip Anyolo as the Archbishop of Kisumu Catholic Diocese.

The news of Anyolo’s appointment was officially published in L’Osservatore Romano in Rome on Thursday.

Bishop Anyolo, who is also the chairman of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops, will be taking over from Archbishop Zacchaeus Okoth who has reached the retirement age for Archbishops having served in the same position since 21 May, 1990.

Now former Archbishop of Kisumu, Zacchaeus Okoth was accused of corruption among a litany of other misdeeds in God’s name by various parish officials, ordained brothers and priests in the archdiocese.

A priest who served the church for over a decade narrated horrifying ordeal he went through at the hands of Archbishop Okoth saying he was transferred twice and demoted for not giving the Archbishop money meant for parish projects.

The newly appointed Archbishop Anyolo was born on May 18, 1956 in Tongaren, Bungoma.

He was ordained priest for the Catholic Diocese of Eldoret in 1983. On December 6, 1995, Pope John Paul II appointed him bishop of Kericho and was consecrated as bishop of Kericho on February 3, 1996.

On February 20, 2002, Pope John appointed him as Apostolic Administrator of Homa Bay upon the resignation of Rt. Rev. Linus Okok Okwach. He later appointed bishop of Homa Bay on March 22, 2003, and installed as Bishop on May 23, 2003.

He was elected Chairman of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops on October 2013 and is currently serving his second term.
