Uhuru’s Big 4 AGENDA! Will It Live Up To Expectation …..

President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Big Four Agenda has received a major boost after Kenya signed a KSh 519 billion agreement with the European Union (EU) The agreement was signed by National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich on Monday, on behalf of the government.

Rotich said the support is in the form of concessional loans and grants with 19 EU member states participating in this second phase of the joint co-operation strategy, Citizen TV reported.

“EU has been a big development partner to Kenya and I want to assure that the support which will be in grants will be well used towards the realisation of our government’s Big Four Agenda,” he said.

The CS added the facility will also boost accountability and governance pillars, support sustainable infrastructure, job creation and build resilience against external weather factors.

“The support will be distributed to different ministries and sectors such us Devolution Ministry to ensure county governments deliver their services effectively,” Rotich added.

His comments were echoed by EU Ambassador to Kenya Stefano Dejak who asserted the need for Kenya to work closely with its partners.

He assured the EU will continue working together with the Kenyan government and support development projects as it seeks to achieve Vision 2030.

Kenya is at a turning point, marked by the need to consolidate and strengthen economic growth, the rule of law and democratic governance to fulfil its Vision 203,” the European External Action Service wrote.

“The Joint Cooperation Strategy will adapt the EU’s approach to best reflect Kenya’s lower middle-income status while addressing the major inequalities and development challenges that persist across the country,” it added.

The money includes indicative financial commitments from the EU, the European Investment Bank (EIB), Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Slovak Republic, Sweden, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom

It is also backed by Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Romania and Spain who lack active co-operation portfolios but engage with Kenya on multiple levels.

This is the second phase of the cooperation project after the first one which was initiated from 2014 to 2018 and attracted 10 EU member states.

The agreement comes one week after the United Kingdom launched a KSh 8 billion Sustainable Urban Economic Development Programme that seeks to support growing urban centres in the country.
