Joho Moves Masses in France With Thoughtful Remarks on Climate Change

If you have ever doubted Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho’s intelligence levels then you should not be in doubts any more. The Mombasa county chief has proved to be one of the most visionary leaders if his recent activities are anything to go by.

Joho was in Paris France at the Paris Peace Forum alongside President Uhuru Kenyatta and Foreign affairs CAS Ababu Namwamba.

Joho and Mombasa County showcased her efforts at preventing and countering violent extremism. The County’s efforts have been acknowledged and endorsed by President Uhuru.

In partnership with the Green String Network through the Kumekucha (It’s a new dawn) project, Mombasa County shared her story on what has led to peace and tranquility in the region.

The county presented business and investment opportunities available in Mombasa and demonstrated the abundant tourism products that visitors can enjoy in it’s tourism sector.

The governor later addressed the Climate Change session where he outlined a series of programs his County Government is undertaking. Key among them is the formulation of the County’s policy & legislative framework that will ensure issues of climate change are prioritized.

The governor informed the forum of the massive housing project that will cater for the inhabitants in Mombasa’s informal settlements and a more effective waste management system and the decommissioning of the oldest landfill in Mombasa.

Joho echoed President Uhuru’s remarks on the green economy with the President affirming Kenya’s commitment towards achieving a green economy come 2022.   He said the government has scaled up investment in renewable energy to address climate change challenge concretely.

“Our target is to attain 100 per cent green energy sufficiency by 2020. We will do this while we achieve 100 per cent access to power for our population, and sharply lower costs to industry to aid our manufacturing push” said President Kenyatta.

“To do even more, we need support from the Green Climate Fund and other mechanisms to enhance our green energy capabilities and accelerate adaptation and mitigation of the impact of climate change,” said President Kenyatta.

The President challenged governments of industrialized countries, where sustainability has been embraced, to support such investments in green energy in Africa.

He said doing so would help mitigate and even reverse the effects of climate change while delivering the jobs and opportunities that will strengthen security and stability on the continent and the world.
