Kenya Railways Comes to the Rescue of Kenyans Amid Matatu Strike

Kenya Railways has today  introduced additional trips on their commuter service routes. This announcement comes on day one of the national  matatu strike that was triggered by the reinstating of the Michuki rules.

Kenyans have sought to the Railway transport as an alternative means of transport. Although some have raised concerns over overloading on the trains.. this concern will be covered, with the additional trips.

This move by Kenya Railways is with the intention to help ease transportation in the city.

The announcement by Kenya Railways has come after the complaints of frustrated Kenyans who have asked the government to provide alternative means as the NYS buses to help Kenyans. Other means that Kenyans had resorted to are motorbikes and taxis which are expensive than the usual transport cost.

The nation wide strike is to oppose the enforcement of the  ‘Michuki rules’. Rules that were named after Mr John Njoroge Michuki, who was the first Transport Minister in the National Rainbow Coalition government.

Some Kenyans have been forced to walk, candidates who are currently sitting for their KCSE exam risk getting late and those with medical emergencies have been greatly affected by this strike.

With the introduction of additional trips, it is highly likely to ease transport but this can only serve as a temporary solution while those who do not live within the railway routes will still remain affected.

What do you think the government can do to improve public transport?
