Two Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates will serve a one year probation after a Thika court found them guilty of stealing mobile phones from an invigilator and a police officer during exams.

The two students from Heights Academy in Thika, are reported to have stolen an Infinix Note 5 valued at Ksh.18,000 from Eunice Wanjiku, a KCSE invigilator and a Techno N65 valued at Ksh.10,000 from Hassan Gabow, a police officer respectively.

The court heard that the two committed the alleged crime on November 6, while sitting their exam papers. They later returned the stolen items which were also produced in court as evidence.

Cabinet Secretary for Education, Amina Mohamed has revealed that 21 people have in the first four days of KCSE examinations been arrested over malpractices countrywide. She also said that the phones of all supervisors and invigilators in the ongoing exams are being monitored by the government to curb the cheating menace that has been the narrative of the country’s national examinations for many years.

“The phones of examination centre managers and invigilators are being monitored to ensure they don’t tamper with the examinations. Anyone who tries to do so will be arrested and charged,” said Amina Mohamed.

“Anyone who tries to smuggle foreign materials into examination centres will be in for a rude shock. We have a fully installed surveillance system…no one can steal the examinations,” she added.
