Just pause for a moment and imagine that Kenya has elected a gay governor. Just stop that train of thought because such news can send people like moral police, Ezekiel Mutua into a coma.

Well, in America, Jared Polis won the Colorado gubernatorial race in an election that has seen him become the first openly gay person to be elected Governor in the US.

“I also want to take a moment to acknowledge where we are and how we got here. Tonight in Colorado we proved that we’re an inclusive state that values every contribution, regardless of someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity,” said Polis in his victory speech.

The historic first for Polis means Democrats will retain the governor’s mansion in Colorado and the LGBT community will secure rare representation at the statewide level. Polis’s victory will also mean that his partner, Marlon Reis, and children Cora and Caspian, will join him in the governor’s mansion, making them the country’s first same-sex first family.

“For the L.G.B.T.Q pioneers before me who endured so much hardship and hurt to make it possible for so many of us, myself included, to live and to love openly and proudly, and to the people in this room I want to say I am profoundly grateful for all the work we’ve done to overcome,” said Polis.

While America’s mid term election has seen many firsts: the first class of over 100 women elected to the House, the first Muslim women in Congress, the first Native American women in Congress, the youngest women in Congress, Polis’s election as the first openly gay governor is one that will spark many conversations especially on the internet.

As much as we may have different beliefs and consider ourselves an 80% Christian nation, it would be stupid of us as a country to bury our heads in the sand and ignore the issue of gayism and lesbianism. The truth is, the world is changing and Kenya is not being left behind. The LGBT community is growing in the country and as much as we do not want to admit it, this is our reality.

So the question is, should Kenya legalize same sex marriage?
