TRAGIC! Mother losses three children to deadly fire incident in Mukuru slums

A family is mourning the loss of three children after a deadly fire gutted houses in Nairobi’s Mukuru Kwa Njenga slums on Tuesday morning.

According to witnesses, the three children aged between six weeks and 3 years were alone in the house when the fire started around 7:30 am.

“She had gone to buy mandazi for breakfast and left tea boiling on a Kerosene stove boiling,” Dominic Njuguna, who is the chairman of security affairs in the slum, said.

Neighbours could not get into the burning house because of raging flames. The flames spread quickly to other houses, destroying 20 of them. The woman’s husband had left for work when the incident happened. The bodies of the victims were taken to the City Mortuary.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time that, slum fire has turned tragic. In September this year, eight people died after a fire outbreak in Silanga slums, Kibera.

The victims included a pregnant woman and a child who were trapped in the fire which locals say spread very quickly.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko who visited the area gave landlords in the area a notice of twenty-one days to bring down structures that block access-ways to pave way for construction of a road which will assist during fire outbreaks.

“I am giving the landlords here in Kibera twenty-one days. If you know you have blocked access paths for the residents, please start making way so that people may pass,” he stated.

He assured locals that the national government the county government are working closely to come up with a lasting solution.
