There are shocking stories in kenya daily but few for sure will always break the record like a campaign geared towards dethronement of God who most kenyans have faith in.

Atheists in Kenya (AIK) have declared their support for a constitutional amendment and suggested a referendum be held before the 2022 General Election. The atheists, however, presented their own share of issues which they would like to see adequately addressed through the proposed plebiscite.

In a press statement November 6, AIK president Harrison Mumia pointed out a number of clauses the group wanted expunged from the 2010 Constitution.

“We would like to support calls for the amendment of the Constitution of Kenya 2010. It is our firm position that we need to hold a constitutional referendum before the 2022 General Elections,” Mumia said.

The atheists proposed for removal of the words God and Allah arguing the use of these two terms categorised Kenyans were either Christians or Muslims.

“Firstly, the preamble which states “We, the people of Kenya acknowledging the supremacy of the Almighty God of all creation” be expunged. As atheists, we do not acknowledge the supremacy of God, neither do we recognise the existence of God. The Constitution must not assume that all Kenyans believe in a Supreme Being,” the atheists proposed.

Secondly, the non-believers proposed that Article 170 on Kadhi Courts be removed. “We would like a Constitution that is truly secular. We would want equal treatment of all religions by the state,” AIK said. Thirdly, they want statement “So help me God” be expunged from all the oaths of affirmation under The Third Schedule.

The atheists also want Article 8 which states “There shall be no state religion” be replaced with “Parliament shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion”

In addition, AIK would like to have Article 45 which states the family is the natural and fundamental unit of society and the necessary basis of social order be amended. The Article further stipulates every adult has the right to marry a person of the opposite sex based on the free consent of the parties.

“We do support gay rights and hold the position that marriage should be between any two consenting adults. The words “marry a person of the opposite sex” should be expunged. We further hold that the family is not the natural unit of society. They are fundamental and necessary for social order,” the atheists said.

Lastly, AIK proposed that the national anthem be re-written to reflect a country that is truly secular. “We would like the words “Oh God of all creation” expunged from the National Anthem,” the proposed. This is not the first time the atheists are protesting the use of God’s name in the Constitution and in Kenyan courts.

Atheism is not an affirmative belief that there is no god nor does it answer any other question about what a person believes. It is simply a rejection of the assertion that there are gods.

Do you think atheists stand the tiniest chance with their new demand?
