Have you ever escape death by a whisker?

A motorist driving along Nairobi Nakuru highway had a scary experience today morning  after his Toyota Harriet hit an oncoming vehicle and burst into flames near Kinungi area in Nairobi.

Passersby and other motorists stared helplessly at the vehicle burning on the roadside next to the other wreckage whose occupants were unhurt in the incident.

Last week yet another 51-seater Simba Coach bus burst into flames at Ivingoni, Kibwezi subcounty at dawn.

However the commuters managed to escape unhurt after the incident.

A few weeks earlier, another incident involving a Tahmed bus was reported. The bus had left Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and burnt down allegedly due to friction between tyres.

It was reported that a passenger requested the driver to stop at Komkonga to uproot some medicinal herbs when he (the passenger) noticed fire on one of the tyres.

The passenger then alerted fellow travelers who quickly alighted from the bus.

Last month another 14-seater matatu burst into flames on Juja Road on morning with passengers on board.

The vehicle was full of passengers, who escaped unhurt in the incident that happened in the Huruma Flats area.

The same month another  68 seater bus bursted into flames in  Pinyiny area on the Narok – Mai Mahiu Road.

In a span of one month another 62-seater Isuzu bus claimed the lives of 52 people  at fort ternan.

The number of people killed in road accidents so far this year is more than that of those killed last year. By August 13, some 1,859 people had died in road crashes. Last year, 1,760 people were killed, according to National Transport and Safety Authority statistics.

Pedestrians remain the most vulnerable, accounting for 709 recorded deaths this year. In the same period, 420 passengers have been killed, as well as 340 motorcyclists, 190 drivers and 164 motorcycle passengers.

An NTSA survey dated August 13, 2018 also indicates that 36 pedal cyclists were also killed during the period. The data indicates that 99 more people (5.6 per cent) had died by last week compared to total fatalities last year.

The number will rise if the road carnage is not curbed.
