Suicide is a sad reality around the world and has recently been prevalent in Kenya. However, if one wants to end their own life, why must they drag their loved ones to the grave with them? It’s quite selfish if you ask me.

Shock has paralyzed residents of Piave area in Njoro, Nakuru County after a police officer has shot dead his wife and then committed suicide after they allegedly has a domestic quarrel.

The body of the 28-year old Constable Cornelius Kipngetich and that of his wife Eunice Wambui were found lying in a pool of blood inside their single room camp at the Piave Patrol Base in Njoro.

Confirming the incident, Nakuru County Police Commander Hassan Barua said the incident was reported by the officers’ neighbour and colleague, Constable Hillary Chekai who had been sent to give instructions to Mr Kipngetich.

“It was the colleague who discovered the deaths after knocking several times on their door without getting a response,” said Mr Barua.

According to Constable Hillary Chekai, he realised something was amiss when he got no response from the couple who had locked the door from inside.

“I peeped through the window and saw the body of the wife lying on the floor in a pool of blood then I reported the incident to the Officer Commanding Police Station in Njoro,” said Mr Chekai.

According to the officer, the three-month-old couple were inseparable, lived a seemingly peaceful and happy life. The late Eunice Wambui’s uncle, Steven Maina, said the girl completed high school last year and was staying in his house before she met the officer and moved into his house three months ago.

“She used to work in a cafe at the centre, the place where she met with the officer. They loved each other and decided to live together after the officer took her to his parents,” said Mr Maina.

Mr. Maina now says that he does not understand the whole incident because the two seemed happy the day before when he spent time with them.

This case of love gone sour is nothing new especially in this generation where many people are in emotionally, physically and mentally abusive relationships but are putting up a façade just to show the rest of the world that they are happy when they really aren’t.

This is not the first time something like this has happened in Nakuru County. Last year in September, a police officer by the name Stephen Mungai Kinuthia, who was stationed at Molo Police Station in Nakuru County allegedly shot his girlfriend three times before taking his life with the same AK47 rifle at their rental house in Freehold Area.

What do you think is the reason people choose to stay in relationships they’re unhappy with?
