Mo Salah Sculptor Finally Opens Up

How would you feel after spending months on end working on what you consider to be a masterpiece only for you to put out your art and be mocked by fans? It can be quite deflating for any artist who has put in time, effort and creativity into their craft and in the end face harsh criticism.

It’s always easier for you on the other end to criticize a piece of art than to think about how difficult it is to deliver an accurate representation of one of the world’s best footballers. This was sculpture artist, Mai Abdel Allah’s life after her  sculpture of Mo Salah was unveiled in Egypt.

The artist made a sculpture of renowned footballer Mo Salah in his trademark celebration pose with arms aloft to the crowd. The sculptor portrayed Salah in an over-sized head and unusually short and skinny legs and according to her, she chose Salah for her work because of the weight his name carries and his importance in Egypt and abroad. She wanted to honor the player by making him a statue saying that Mo Salah is the pride of Egypt.

As the new statue of the Liverpool star was unveiled at the World Youth Forum in Sharm al-Sheikh, football fans went to the internet and criticized the sculpture which if you care to admit, looks nothing like Mo Salah.

Well apparently, you’re not the only one who thinks so. The sculptor, Abdel Allah has finally come out to comment on the criticism her statue received. Abdel Allah said that she was not fully satisfied with the end product.

“I welcome all criticisms this statue received; this is natural because an artist is subjected to a number of tastes but I am personally not happy with the statue’s final product,”said Abdel Allah.
“Bronze did not do it justice and I had no hand in pouring [the mold] in bronze because bronze can only be poured in specific places in Egypt and sculptors cannot do it on their own,” she added.
So if she was not happy with the sculpture as she claims, then why would she release it to the public?

It seems like all these sculptors trying to do statues of famous footballers are failing miserably. Last year, artist Emanuel Santos was trolled on social media for a sculpture he made of Cristiano Ronaldo. The criticism was so much, the sculpture had to be replaced.
As an artist, would you put out work you’re not happy about?
