Governor Sonko Paints a Smile on Autistic Nairobi Kids

Governor Mike Sonko has today donated School Boxes, Clothes, Shoes, Duvet and food stuff as part of the Autism Acceptance Awareness Campaign at Makadara Rehabilitation Centre.

Autism is a developmental disorder characterized by troubles with social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior.

Parents usually notice signs during the first two or three years of their child’s life.

These signs often develop gradually, though some children with autism reach their developmental milestones at a normal pace before worsening.

In his recent post following the initiative Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko said that:

“Autism is still a misunderstood condition in Kenya. More needs to be done to educate the public about the disorder.

Many parents of young children have very little knowledge about the signs of autism and therefore do not seek help early enough. While there is currently no cure for autism, early detection and intervention can result in critical improvement.

You can help assist children with autism and their families by supporting various initiatives that seek to raise awareness and provide material donations.

The boxes and shoes we will be collecting will help these children in their learning and comfort. I urge all of us to get involved to increase understanding and acceptance of those with autism.

With those few remarks, I thank you all for participating in this noble initiative.”
