‘You are so wrong’ Pep Guardiola in row with Man Utd hero Gary Neville

Pep Guardiola in row with Man Utd hero Gary Neville over controversial Man City comment | Football | Sport

Neville has accused Manchester City of becoming cynical foulers and being masters of the dark arts.

The former right-back, now a pundit , believes City players – led by Fernandinho – deliberately foul to slow the game down.

But Guardiola thinks Neville is wrong and he has hit back at the Old Trafford hero.

“Never have my teams been focused on doing something wrong against opponents,” he said ahead of Sunday’s clash with Southampton.

“It’s never happened in my career and never will happen.

“I completely do not agree with those comments that we are a team looking for these kind of situations. It never happened in Barcelona or Bayern Munich and it can never happen at City. Never.”

City are renowned as the slickest side in the Premier League but Neville had said: “It is not just nice, it’s not just football, either.

“Every time a team wins the ball back and go on the counter-attack, they foul them.

“There is a lot of cynicism about this team. Fernandinho must make 400 fouls a match and the totting up process doesn’t exist for him.

“Actually, he just brings people down regularly. It isn’t just pure, wonderful football. There is a lot of what are the dark arts in there as well in terms of how they play.”

But Guardiola responded: “We are a team that tries to play and, of course, when there is a counter-attack sometimes there is contact and a foul.

“Sometimes situations happen. We are a team that always try to attack, to defend well, to try to play our game — but never having to think about making actions like that.

“I’m not disclosing a secret when I say that when the opponent has the ball we’re going to push them, press them to regain the ball to attack more.

“But people have to know, and Gary knows because he was a former player, the opponents play, too.

“Sometimes they dribble, you arrive late and make a foul. I’m not saying we don’t make fouls.

“But to do it deliberately, no. If a team has 65 or 70 per cent of the ball, they cannot kick opponents. I don’t think we’re a team that makes a lot of fouls.”
