It’s hard to imagine that high school students can manage to bypass security at a school’s main gate and find their way into a dormitory full of girls. Are students safe in school?

According to Kyaani Secondary School Principal Elizabeth Musyimi, the school guard alerted her of commotion in the girl’s dormitory at around 11:45 pm. The dormitory captain in a police statement said that the boys threw stones on the roof to cause panic in the dormitory before they made their way in.

The two boys are said to have gained entry into the compound by cutting through a chain link fence and thereafter entering Upendo dormitory where all 47 Form Four candidates are housed.

They were arrested and detained at Matinyani Police Station awaiting to be arraigned in court.

This year in March, police arrested five male students who sneaked into Cardinal Otunga Girls High School and hid in a dormitory. According to police, four students from St Mary’s Kibabii Boys High School and one from ACK Good Shepherd Secondary School were dressed in girls’ pullovers and T-shirts.

Such incidents raise questions and cause students and parents to panic especially after the recent and devastating incident at Moi Girls High School when a stranger accessed a school and raped some girls in the dead of night.

Do you think security in schools ought to be beefed up?
