Police killing police? Does this only happen in Kenya?

Well, two police officers, Police Constables Benjamin Kahindi Changawa and Stanley Okoti, attached to Kabete Police Station have been found guilty of murdering an Administration Police officer, Constable Joseph Obongo attached to the late Bomachoge MP, Joel Onyancha and his two relatives Geoffrey Mogoi and Amos Okenye in Kangemi in 2014.

On October 7, 2014, the two officers were accused of shooting and killing the AP and his friends who were initially said to be robbers and were intercepted in an attempt to rob a bar in Kangemi. It however emerged that the killing of the three might have been a case of mistaken identity.

“Following the shooting, Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) acting pursuant to its statutory mandate under Section 7(1)(a) and 25(1) of the IPOA Act launched investigations on 7th October 2014 to unravel the circumstances that led to the deaths, and to establish whether the Police Officers were justified in the use of their firearms,” reads the statement from IPOA Communications Director Dennis Oketch.”

IPOA senior communications officer Dennis Oketch added that former Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko in 2015 concurred with the agency’s recommendations that the two be arraigned on three counts of murder.
