Unfortunately police in Kirinyaga County are investigating a case in which a 35-year-old man was allegedly killed by a money lending group for failing to pay a debt of KSh 700. Joseph Muthike from Mutitu village was killed on the night of Wednesday, October 31, by a suspected group of notorious boda boda operators who are known for collecting debts
According to reports the group is well known in the area for operating a kangaroo court that summons debt defaulters for questioning and taking action after issuing several warnings for timely payment. Confirming the incident, Ndia OCPD Sicily Gatiti said Muthike was beaten and succumbed to injuries on his way home.
“We found the body near St. Philip High School, preliminary investigations have revealed that he was beaten by unknown group and died on his way home,” said Gatiti
Gatiti denied claims of the boda boda riders group saying if any such group existed in the region they could take action against the perpetrators. “Let me tell you boda boda operators, we only recognise legal businesses, if there is anyone running illegal business, they will be dealt with accordingly,” said the officer.
Gatiti called on the residents to report people running illegal businesses in the area and asked money lenders to follow the right procedure in claiming their money.
