Growing up in the 1980s and 1990s was an absolute pleasure. We were the last generation of kids who truly knew how to be kids.

We were also the generation that knew going to school meant you would be the president and you would fly the planes from Nairobi to New york .

Remember when we promised our parents that we would fly the plane over the house and drop a loaf of bread as we go ..

Those were the days

Here are some of the memories you will probably never forget from primary school.

                                                             Assembly

There was always a school parade every Monday and Friday morning. And depending on how the weekend had been , if there were cases of stealing Ugali for those in boarding and any other scandal ,culprits would be announced and face the music.

Then there was the moment of inspection for those with dirty clothes or untidy hair . This gave me shivers and for the ninjas they would change lines to evade .

                                                           P.E.

Physical education was a “mandatory” part of the syllabus. But if you had a teacher who for some reason wanted the syllabus over , this was a bomb shell for the footballers.

For some of us, laziness set in as soon as puberty set in. P.E. for me was an exercise in prison breaks. Always hiding when people are supposed to be going for cross country.

                                                         Closing day

Those in boarding knew no alarm to wake them on the day of cosing , some were up at 3am folding clothes and when they were done , they would remember a shirt they dind fold and unpack to fold it again .

the excitement was all over.

This was also a momentous occasion for the school to capitalize on the free labour they got from pupils. We would be charged with cleaning the school. Anyone who was smart and not afraid to wake up early would get to clean windows.

                                            Swinging in chairs

In every class was a cautionary tale of that kid who swung with the seat too much and eventually broke something. But whoever listened to such warnings?

Some even custized chairs to bend

Feeling like a god when you help the teacher carry something to the staff room

Those kinds of special chores made you feel like a million shillings because you knew you’d be one of the elite few who enter staff rooms for good reasons.

For some a call to the staff room meant war or to witness on how someone stole a piece of ugali to eat the following day

These would occur depending on how malicious the teacher on duty was. They would check the hair, nails, collars, tie, and socks and even go as far as smelling your mouth , i mean why did some teachers brew so much for some of us?

Every one ended up on one of these. A list where those who spoke in class without permission (or made noise) would be written down for punishment. Some class monitors were so infuriatingly thorough that they would write your name and multiply it by the number of times they had seen them speaking.

Some pupils would steal a list of nosemakers and bring trouble for the whole class .

But some stole the piece of paper and replaced it other names including the class prefect and wait for the teacher to ask for t.

When the teacher would come in with a sheet with names and marks in an excel table, you’d know the results were about to be announced. It would be heart-breaking when your name is said first and the teacher was announcing the results from the bottom on the list.
