Following the midweek defeat and limp performance against Juventus in the Champions League, Manchester United returned to winning ways on Sunday against Everton.

Jose Mourinho’s men beat Marco Silva’s side 2-1 at Old Trafford. Mourinho made the bold decision to drop Romelu Lukaku against his former employers.

However, by early in the second half against Everton, Mourinho’s Lukaku decision was vindicated.

Paul Pogba opened the scoring for Man United in the 27th minute, while Anthony Martial doubled the lead in the 49th minute.

A late penalty from Gylfi Sigurdsson proved mere consolation for Everton.

? Anthony Martial: Man of the Match ?

A post shared by Manchester United (@manchesterunited) on

The French forward has scored four goals in his last three Premier League matches.

Of course, back in the summer rumours were flying about that Martial could be heading out the Old Trafford exit door.

Martial memorably left Man United’s pre-season tour in America to return to Europe for the birth of his second child.

So how has Martial turned his fortunes around at United?

According to Mourinho, he deserves his fair share of praise for Martial’s upturn in form. The Man United boss said:

When the players are playing bad it’s my fault, when the players play well it’s my responsibility!

Mourinho also commented that Martial has finally got his “brain and body to be ready”.

Martial has keen to extend his Manchester United contract, even if Jose Mourinho remains United boss.

The relationship between Mourinho and Martial has been scrutinised by some sections of the media and it was thought Martial would not stay at United if Mourinho did.

Martial’s current deal runs out in July of 2019 but it now seems that both Martial and United are keen for the Frenchman to extend his stay in Manchester.
