With parents spending time in the work environments away from children to meet family needs , parents will have to ensure children dont fall victim to gangs in the estates.

The unusually long December holiday is once again with us. The two-month break which commenced last week, is a nightmare to parents, particularly those in urban areas as their children are exposed to great danger. The holiday demands parents exercise their parental responsibilities by offering their children maximum protection as they are exposed to great danger since several criminal activities take place during the festive season. But there is a tendency by some parents to leave their parenting responsibilities solemnly to their house helps who at times instill bad morals in their children.

There are also reports of some children engaging in illegal activities such as drug and alcohol abuse and sexual escapades without their parents’ knowledge. This is attributed to negative peer influence and pressure, alongside laxity among parents who do not care what their children do and the people they associate with. Some parents also do not keep a close eye on their children at all times which results in cases of the children getting lost.
Indeed, if asked to make a choice many parents would prefer that the children were back in school sooner than later. Not only do they worry about whether their children are safe in their absence but also the increased financial burden that comes with the long holidays.

The situation is made worse by the upsurge of betting and gaming machines which attract many school-going children. It’s at these betting and gaming places that the children, especially the teenagers, are introduced to alcohol and drugs and other immoralities.
Our appeal is to the parents to ensure their children are under their watch for the sake of their education and their future. They must look for innovative ways to keep the children occupied and focused over this period.

For the girls, we appeal to them to exercise caution as predatory men are out there to sexually exploit them in the name of love. The government agencies must also be vigilant to ensure children do not engage in immoralities.
Finally, we wish all candidates writing exams good luck.
