Hii si ya Maskini! The fare that each passenger paid on the first flight to New York

Kenya made history last night when it flagged off its first direct flight to the United States. The plane a KQ Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with 234 passengers on board left the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at around 11.20pm on Sunday night.

By the time it touches down at the JF Kennedy International Airport later today at around 1.25pm, It would have traveled for more than 11,800 Kilometers in approximately 15 hours.

According to details, previous flights from Nairobi to the US normally take 22 hours, the new trip will reduce the trip, which is normally long and tortuous through the middle East or Europe, by four hours.

But of course you know all that by now. I am here to talk about the fare that each passenger will pay.

Of the 234 passengers, 30 were in the business class while 204 will be in economy class. Those in the economy class paid Sh89,000 for a return ticket, while the same costs Sh260,000 in business class.

Now that’s not a small amount of money for the majority of Kenyans and that could be the reason why most of the passengers on board can be classified in the category of who owns Kenya.

Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Dr. Monica Juma led a legion of high profile dignitaries on the flight. Apart from Dr Juma, other senior officials aboard are Cabinet Secretary James Macharia, Kenya Airways chief executive Sebastian Mikosz and chairman, Michael Joseph among others.

Other notable people on board are Citizen TV Journalist Jeff Koinange and CNN’s renown business presenter Richard Quest. These are people who can afford it.

The plane will also use 85,000 liters of fuel on the journey. According to President Uhuru Kenyatta, Kenya’s direct flights to US “are set to provide a seamless experience for business and leisure travellers alike. It will allow the world to taste Kenya’s diverse cultures and hospitality.”
