Nyong’o’s International Award Sets the Internet On Fire as Blogger Calls it Fake

An international award by the United Nations to Kisumu governor Anyang Nyong’o has elicited many reactions on social media. This was majorly due to a typo error on the award.

Prof. Nyongo received an Excellence in Leadership Award from United Nations Project one. Many of his followers especially from Kisumu county congratulated him for his award while others advised him to return the award since it had a typo error.

Kisumu was apparently wrote as Kismumu and the people from Kisumu did not take that lightly.

The Kisumu governor was awarded for establishing an outstanding economic development initiative to establish Kisumu City as a commercial hub within the East and Central African States.

“This morning I received an Excellence in Leadership Award from Project One for establishing an outstanding economic development initiative to establish Kisumu City as a commercial hub within the East and Central African States,” wrote Anyang Nyongo


The fete was from Project One United Nations, a non-profit 501c3 corporation and a member of the Economic and Social Council to the United Nations as a non-government organization (NGO) with special consultative status.

Blogger Robert Alai though was not moved by the Professor’s award as he termed it Fake.

Anyang Nyongo has had a career in politics and public service for a long period of time and his track record speaks for itself.

Anyang’ Nyong’o’s Track Record

Highlights:
  • Improved health and educational facilities in his constituency
  • Pushed for universal health access for Kenyans under NHIF
  • Established the National Economic and Social Council (NESC) that led to the formulation of Vision 2030

MP for Kisumu Rural:
Prof. Nyong’o recorded great achievements in health and education even before CDF was established. He solicited the help of international and local development agencies, such as the German embassy in Nairobi, the Kenya Chairty Sweepstake, Barclays Bank of Kenya, East African Breweries and United Millers, to improve conditions of medical and educational facilities in the constituency. Examples are Arito Langi, Riat Health Centres and Ratta, Chulaimbo, Odowa Kadongo and Nyambuoyo Schools, among many other institutions.
Minister of Planning and National Development:
As Minister for Planning and National Development, Prof. championed the establishment of the National Economic and Social Council (NESC) for the first time in Kenya’s history. This was a high level think-unit within government that offered policy guidance leading to unprecedented clarity in vision and plans of government. It is the NESC that led the formulation of Vision 2030, which the government continues to pursue to date. Prof. Nyong’o was also the driver of the Economic Recovery Strategy for Wealth and Employment Creation that saw Kenya’s economy record massive growth up to 7% under the NARC government.
Minister of Medical Services:
As medical Services Minister, Prof. Nyong’o pushed for universal health access, through a national health insurance scheme. Although vested interests fought the move, he was able to expand the coverage of NHIF to outpatient services and to cover other diseases and specialized treatment that were not initially covered by the Fund. Today, NHIF supports even treatment abroad and enlists many more Kenyans as members.
Senator, Kisumu County:
In both the National Assembly and Senate, Prof. Nyong’o has been a distinguished parliamentarian and among the leading defenders of public interest in legislation. More importantly, Prof. Nyong’o has stood out as a leader keen to see the use of public funds in public interest, fighting corruption and misappropriation of public resources. He served as Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in the National Assembly and currently Chairperson of the Senate Public and Investments Accounts Committee (PAIC). In the Senate, Prof. Nyong’o recently initiated and led the efforts to save the national carrier Kenya Airways from collapse. Working with other Senators, he succeeded in establishing the causes of inefficiency and institutional failure at Kenya Airways, informing government intervention.
