Paulo Dybala’s first-half goal guided Juve to a 1-0 victory. The defeat leaves Manchester United second in Group H, five points behind the Italian giants.

It was Ronaldo’s first return to Old Trafford since the Portugal international’s £100m move to Juve in the summer. Ronaldo, 33, opted to quit Real Madrid to challenge himself in Serie A.

And the forward, who spent six years at United from 2003 to 2009, thanked the Old Trafford faithful for a kind reception last night.

“An important victory in a very emotional match for me. It was great playing at Old Trafford again,” he wrote on his Instagram.

“Thanks to all the fans for the reception and support.”

Cristiano Ronaldo won three Premier League titles and the Champions League during his time at United under Sir Alex Ferguson.

And the Portugal star hailed the United hero, who had emergency brain surgery earlier this year, before Juve’s trip to Old Trafford.

He said: “Emotional, I can remember what it was like when I was at Manchester.

“I won lots of trophies here. I remember the support as well, the support was fantastic.

“Here I have many memories of victories and affection and in particular with Sir Alex Ferguson, to whom I send a big hug.

“He is a person who helped me so much.”

United are back in action Sunday afternoon, with the Red Devils hosting Everton in the Premier League (4pm kick off).

Jose Mourinho’s men already find themselves nine points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City after just nine games.

Ronaldo hopes to exert more pressure when they clash in the group stages of champions league tonight.

Ronaldo made his name in Manchester, winning the first of his five Champions League and three Premier League titles under the tutelage of Alex Ferguson, for whom he still retains the highest regard.

Cristiano Ronaldo‘s Old Trafford return wasn’t supposed to be like this. For starters, he should have been wearing the red of Manchester United, rather than Juventus stripes.

That was Ed Woodward‘s mission when he assumed control of the club’s purse strings five years ago – and re-signing the Portuguese international would become something of an obsession for the executive vice chairman.

Yet when the chance truly materialised over the summer, United were nowhere to be seen.
