Gilbert Deya; Glorified Con-Preacher?

Kenyans have been angered by the move taken by a local media station to give airtime to a controversial preacher Gilbert Deya. A section of Kenyans complained that this was inappropriate since Deya has in the past had a bad record of child- trafficking allegations.

The Miracle baby preacher Gilbert Deya was back in May released on Sh10 million cash bail or Sh10 million bond by High Court judge Luka Kimaru. This was after the preacher was deported from the UK to face child theft charges.

Deya was charged with five counts of stealing five children, all aged under 14 years, between 2002 and 2004, at Mountain View Estate, Nairobi.

In January, the High Court quashed the Sh1 million bond Deya had been granted after the DPP sought orders to cancel the release term.

His organization, Gilbert Deya Ministries, claims that Deya is able to help infertile women to conceive through the power of prayer.

Deya’s wife, Eddah (also known as Mary Deya), was arrested during November 2004 in Nairobi and charged with stealing children. Ten children, none of whom had any genetic connection to the Deya family, were found at Mr Deya’s House. Twenty babies have been placed in foster care in Kenya after DNA tests showed they had no connection to their alleged mothers.Rose Atieno Kiserem, a former pastor with Deya’s ministry was jailed along with Mrs Deya. Upon her release from jail, Kiserem confessed that the ‘miracle babies’ were “a hoax created by the Deyas and their accomplices to deceive me and other God-fearing people. (Wikipedia)

In a recent interview, Deya is on record speaking suggestively that he was cleared and now has no case in court.
