Why Duale Might Soon Be Reduced To An MCA

Aden Duale might soon be reduced to an MCA if a referendum was to be held. This is according to Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi.

Through his weekly show the 5th estate, Ngunyi noted that the referendum is a paradox in the sense that, ”if we fail to hold it we will live in perpetual fear every five years but if we hold it, it will open up issues we do not want to deal with.”

He further explained that adopting a parliamentary system might also mean taking up a proportional representation system which will ruffle a few feathers.

The political analyst said that Duale’s constituents are few and proportional representation would mean his role is reduced to that of an MCA.

“I respect Duale, he is the only MP I follow on Twitter because the others are clinically incompetent in my view.

“But you cannot have an MP like Duale representing the same number of people like an MCA in Kiambu or in Umoja in Nairobi.

“We should have the courage to make Duale an MCA or the Kiambu MCA an MP,” he noted.

Recently ODM leader Raila Odinga called for the Constitution to be changed to ensure MCAs are tamed and their minds shift from self-gain to provision of services.

The political class is already split on NASA leader Raila Odinga’s call for a referendum next year.

Some politicians across the divide have supported the call while others led by the deputy president have openly rejected it.

National Assembly minority leader John Mbadi has backed the call, saying the Constitution has put unnecessary weight on Kenyans.

“This is one thing everyone is talking about differently. You will either hear people say the government is too heavy or some talk of overrepresentation. What people are not saying is that we need constitutional amendments,” he said.

“It’s time we reviewed the Constitution. We better review it early enough.”
