Legendary Kipchoge Keino’s global reputation and the fact that he never signed any documents in the Sh55 million Rio Olympics scandal could make him a state witness in the case.
Kipchoge and six other former Sports ministry officials have been implicated in the loss of the funds., including through buying air tickets that were not used.
On Thursday, detectives working on the case said the former National Olympic Committee of Kenya president could be exonerated from blame after agreeing to testify against his co-accused.
The two-time Olympic gold medalist was the NOCK boss until September 2017.
Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji approved the prosecution of Keino on six counts of abuse of office and four counts of willful failure to comply with laws relating to public funds management.
Others facing the charges are former Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario (current Ambassador to Austria), former Finance Officer Patrick Nkabu and former Director of Administration Haron Komen.
Keino, Wario and Nkabu presented themselves at DCI headquarters on Thursday morning after a court order was issued on Monday.
On Monday, former Sports Principal Secretary Richard Ekai, former NOCK assistant treasurer Stephen Soi (who was the Rio Olympics chief de mission) and NOCK secretary general Francis Kanyili appeared in court and denied graft charges.
Ekai and his co-accused were released on a Sh2 million bond each or Sh1 million bail.
Other charges facing the accused persons include the embezzlement of Sh22.5 million, underutilization of air tickets worth Sh16.8 million, loss of Sh15.9 million in overpaid allowances, and Sh6.5 million expenditure on unauthorised persons.
The accused will be arraigned on Monday before anti-corruption chief magistrate Douglas Ogoti.
