Alvaro Morata says his time at Chelsea has not been easy but knows goals will help. The striker arrived from Real Madrid in a club-record deal last summer and scored 15 times in his first season and has added a further three so far in 2018-19.

Chelsea’s new manager Maurizio Sarri has noted how Morata’s confidence issues are affecting his performances and the striker admits he has found the last 12 months tough.

“I am a happy person, especially off the field, outside of football,” he said.“Within football I would like to be happier and for that I have to score more goals, which is what makes me happy. But I am sure that little by little they will enter, because I am having occasions.”

He added: “I have more confidence. Last week I made two goals for Chelsea and the other day, against Wales, I worked for the team.I am very happy to be here and now I have to fight to play.”

Morata scored his first goal in seven games as Chelsea beat Hungarian champions Vidi in the Europa League earlier in October, but did not celebrate.

“I don’t see why I should be happy scoring a goal against an opponent on a much lower level than we are. What’s more, I should have scored more than one and that’s why I was not happy.

Cesc Fabregas insists Alvaro Morata retains the backing of the Chelsea players after the striker ended his goal-drought on Thursday night.

Morata netted the only goal as Chelsea narrowly beat MOL Vidi 1-0 in the Europa League at Stamford Bridge, which was the Spaniard’s first goal since August.

He could have netted in the first half against Vidi, but missed a glorious chance to open the scoring with only the goalkeeper to beat.

However, Morata made amends with his fine finish from close range in the second half before appearing emotional as he celebrated with teammate Willian.
