Wenger reveals how Arsenal will be affected by Ozil’s retirement

Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has warned Unai Emery that midfielder Mesut Ozil could lack motivation at the club because he has stepped away from Germany’s national team.

During the World Cup tournament, where the Germany team was eliminated during the group stages, saw the Arsenal midfielder heavily criticized for his performances. He even clashed with a fan after Germany went was beaten 2-0 by South Korea. Just after the tournament, Ozil announced his retirement from international football and won’t be available for selection as his former side aims to qualify for the Euro 2020.

Ozil who has had a mixture of performances under Emery could be negatively affected by his decision of not to play at international level, according to his former boss Wenger.

Speaking to SportBild, Wenger said, “I believe that Germany needs Ozil. I hope that Low can convince him to come back. Ozil is a super football player, he was not the worst at the World Cup. I did not love that he left Germany’s national team because a small piece of motivation disappears when you know that you do not have to be ready for a World Cup or a European Championship.”

“A small bit of motivation disappears when you know that you don’t have to be ready for a World Cup, a European Championship. I love it when the players are as good as possible. He loses a bit if he does not play at an international level,” he added.

The Frenchman left Emirates Stadium after 22 years in the summer and has yet to take up another role – despite receiving several offers.
