Kilifi will now have Chonyi and Kauma as distinct sub-counties in a move aimed at resolving borders rows between residents of Ganze and Kilifi South Constituencies.

The Chonyi and Kauma communities have been having protracted confrontations over a boundary at Vyambani until Friday when Coast regional commissioner Benard Leparmarailed the commissioning of the two Sub-counties.

Leparmarai on behalf of Interior CS Fred Matiang’i also announced that the new administrative units will get deputy county commissioners who will be stationed at Banda Ra Salama.

In attendance during the commissioning were are leaders led by Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo, Woman Rep Getrude Mbeyu and Kilifi South MP Ken Chonga.

Kilifi County will now have a total of nine Sub-counties after Ganze, Magarini, Malindi, Kaloleni, Makongeni, Kilifi South, Rabai and Kilifi North.

Senator Madzayo thanked the state for the devolved units saying the initiative would take service delivery closer to the people, urging area residents to ready for constitutional changes.

The local administration in Kilifi and several parts of coastal region counties have been under pressure to contain social vices as early marriages and low enrolment levels in schools.
