Wife survives as husband drowns in lake Victoria

Its a painful tragedy and wide search as a 34-year-old man drowned in Lake Victoria after he and his wife fell from Goye Bridge in Bondo on Friday evening.

The wife was rescued but the man is yet to be found.

Francis Odhiambo and his wife Irene Anyango are said to have been traveling to the nearby Osieko beach on a motorbike but as fate would have it, they lost control and plunged into the lake.

According to an eyewitness, Nahum Okila, fishermen at Goye beach rushed to the scene but were unable to get to the man in time.

Bondo Deputy OCPD Ezekiel Akanga told Citizen journalists that the motorbike knocked the rail guards at the bridge before plunging into the lake.

The police boss also revealed the woman was rushed to Got-Agulu hospital where she was treated and discharged.

The search for the man’s body is still ongoing, he added.

Cases of downing in Lake Victoria are growing rampant. 2 months ago a man, his wife and six-month-old baby were among the four who lost their lives after the boat they were travelling in capsized near Sirongo beach in Siaya County.

According to police statistics, in the least, one person dies daily in the lake in one of three countries that share the resource as boat accidents are rampant in the basin.
