Women going braless isn’t exactly new. This movement is meant to create awareness about breast cancer which is a deadly menace.

The Breast Cancer Awareness Month, marked in countries across the world every October, helps to increase attention and support for the awareness, early detection and treatment as well as palliative care of this disease.

There are about 1.38 million new cases and 458 000 deaths from breast cancer each year (IARC Globocan, 2008). Breast cancer is by far the most common cancer in women worldwide, both in the developed and developing countries. In low- and middle-income countries the incidence has been rising up steadily in the last years due to increase in life expectancy, increase urbanization and adoption of western lifestyles.

Currently there is not sufficient knowledge on the causes of breast cancer, therefore, early detection of the disease remains the cornerstone of breast cancer control. When breast cancer is detected early, and if adequate diagnosis and treatment are available, there is a good chance that breast cancer can be cured. If detected late, however, curative treatment is often no longer an option. In such cases, palliative care to relief the suffering of patients and their families is needed.

The majority of deaths (269 000) occur in low- and middle-income countries, where most women with breast cancer are diagnosed in late stages due mainly to lack of awareness on early detection and barriers to health services. Maria’s story (see below) illustrates this dramatic situation common to thousands of women in resource constrained settings. A situation that can be reverted if adequate public health programmes are put in place.

WHO promotes comprehensive breast cancer control programmes as part of national cancer control plans. The recommended early detection strategies for low- and middle-income countries are awareness of early signs and symptoms and screening by clinical breast examination in demonstration areas. Mammography screening is very costly and is feasible only in countries with good health infrastructure that can afford a long-term programme.

But in 2018, it’s not enough to simply skip the over-the-shoulder-boulder-holder — you have to make sure everyone knows you’re doing it, too. Which must be why Twitter is currently blowing up with “no bra club” crop tops, worn by the (duh) braless likes of influencers and models.

The campaign which is trending has left most man salivating especially those who do not understand the significance of this day .

A day is for the world to join hands to help curb this deadly menace which is taking many lives if not detected early enough.

It is aimed at reaching out to those who live in ignorance without knowing that it affects both genders.

  1. Bras are the leading cause of breast cancer. I am a medical anthropologist breast cancer researcher and co-author of Dressed to Kill: The Link Between Breast Cancer and Bras.

Bra-free women have about the same risk of breast cancer as men, while the tighter and longer the bra is worn the higher the risk rises, to over 100 times higher for a 24/7 bra-user compared to a bra-free woman.

It has to do with constriction of the lymphatic system by bras, which is the immune system. Red marks or indentations left caused by the bra are signs of constriction. Constriction and impairment of lymphatic drainage causes fluid and toxin accumulation within the breasts, and prevents the immune system from fighting cancer cells as they develop.

Bras are also the leading cause of breast pain and cysts, and they make breasts droop. There is actually nothing good about bras. When women stop wearing bras they report that their breast pain and cysts go away, and their breasts lift and tone. They also say they can breathe easier without a tight band around the chest.

It’s time to end the breast cancer epidemic. We can do this if women stop constricting their breasts with tight bras.

FYI, here are some of the most recent studies showing bras cause cancer:
2015 Comparative study of breast cancer risk factors at Kenyatta National Hospital and the Nairobi Hospital J. Afr. Cancer (2015) 7:41-46. This study found a significant bra-cancer link in pre-and post-menopausal women.

2016 Wearing a Tight Bra for Many Hours a Day is Associated with Increased Risk of Breast Cancer Adv Oncol Res Treat 1: 105. This is the first epidemiological study to look at bra tightness and time worn, and found a significant bra-cancer link.

2016 Brassiere wearing and breast cancer risk: A systematic review and meta-analysis World J Meta-Anal. Aug 26, 2015; 3(4): 193-205 “This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the association between 8 areas of brassiere-wearing practices and the risk of breast cancer. Twelve case-control studies met inclusion criteria for review. Although the meta-analysis shows statistically significant findings to support the association between brassiere wearing during sleep and breast cancer risk, evidence was insufficient to establish a positive association between brassiere wearing (duration and type) and breast cancer risk. A large-scale epidemiological study is needed to examine the relationship between various forms of brassiere exposure and breast cancer risk.”
