Pogba’s statement that will land him in trouble with Mourinho

Pogba was striped of the captaincy at Old Trafford by Jose Mourinho recently after skippering the side at the beginning of the season. The Frenchman has endured a difficult relationship with Mourinho for several months.

And now the 25-year-old, currently on international duty for the Nations League, has seemingly aimed a fresh swipe at the Special One. Pogba is adamant he’ll continue to be a dominant voice on the pitch regardless of who has the armband.

“I’ve never played in the France team to be captain, being here is already a big thing for me,” he said. “You don’t have to be captain in order to speak, a leader is not someone who has the armband. As a leader you can talk on the pitch but I’ve seen leaders who didn’t necessarily talk.

“With my age, 25 years old, I’m between the two sets of players, the oldest and the youngest.

“That allows me to relay messages and have the chance to be heard.”

Pogba seemed to build some bridge with Mourinho over the weekend by producing a fine display in Saturday’s win over Newcastle.

The midfield powerhouse was superb in the second half at Old Trafford as the Red Devils came from two behind to win 3-2 in dramatic fashion.

France and Arsenal great Robert Pires has told Pogba to continue to let his feet do the talking on the pitch amid the ongoing speculation surrounding him and Mourinho.

He said: ”For Paul Pogba, the best is to say nothing. He’s a great player. If Man Utd paid a lot of money for him, it’s because he’s a good player.

“His relation with the manager may not be so good but he’s a professional. It’s very important for him to be focussed on Man United, on the pitch.

“Now say nothing, play football and walk out – that’s my advice for Paul Pogba.”
