Marcus Rashford was ‘left bemused’ by Jose Mourinho’s comments after Manchester United’s victory over Newcastle.

United came from two goals down to beat the Magpies 3-2 at Old Trafford on Saturday, potentially saving Mourinho’s job.

The Portuguese offered something of an explanation for his players’ nervous first-half performance, saying that Rashford was “sad on the pitch and Scott McTominay was “scared on the pitch”.

“Even older players commit mistakes that are not normal,” he said, adding: “Maybe it was my wrong decision to play Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay.

“They were not ready for this level of pressure that the man-hunting is bringing. I cope with it. I am mature, I can live with it, some of the boys are not coping well with it. The way they started the game was panicking.”

It was all a bit weird, with Paul Scholes having a right old go at him for it.

And it seems as though the players themselves also took umbrage with Mourinho’s comments, with The Sun claiming that Rashford was ‘left bemused’, while McTominay ‘could have every reason to feel disappointed’.
