The excess consumption of alcohol in Kiambu, Nyeri and Kisumu counties is likely to affect their economic growth, the anti-drugs agency has warned.

According to the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse chairman John Mututho, 60 per cent of alcohol produced in the country is consumed in the three areas.

He said research by the agency shows that very many bars are operating in the areas with alcohol continuing to have devastating effects on both individuals and families.

“In Gem Constituency for example, there are areas with only 10 registered bars while in Juja alone, there are 6,000 outlets. In Gatunyu area off Thika town, there are 31 shops and 26 of them are bars,” said Mr Mututho.

“It is just sheer common knowledge that people are drinking too much alcohol,” said the anti-drug crusader in an interview with the Nation on Sunday.

Mr Mututho said men between the ages of 17 to 40 were mostly abusing alcohol and that, unemployment was the leading factor.

The former Naivasha MP said the areas with the highest consumption of alcohol were incidentally very productive economically but warned they faced a bleak future if the vice is not nipped in the bud.

He said other countries like the US and Russia had also realized the devastating repercussions of alcohol and had very strict rules.

The US, he noted, had lowered the legal blood alcohol level that constitutes drunken driving from 0.08 to 0.05.

Australia has also banned alcohol during football matches.
