‘Stay away from Man City bus’ Pep Guardiola warns Liverpool fans after April attacks

Pep Guardiola has warned Liverpool fans to steer clear of Manchester City’s team bus tomorrow. City return to Anfield for the first time since April, when Kop yobs attacked their coach before their Champions League quarter-final clash.

Some City fans had even planned to line the route to defend their stars. But furious Guardiola said: “Why should supporters have to protect our bus? Are you kidding me?“The best way to protect it is down to the Liverpool fans.

“We should not need the police. We arrive there, both sides, to play a Premier League game.

“I would like the police to go home at 4.30pm with their families, to drink a beer and love the show, that is what they should do.

“But that depends on the Liverpool people — not on Manchester City.

“Fans should be going to watch the game.”

In April, their bus was unable to make the return journey — with a window smashed and thousands of pounds of damage caused.

City lost the first leg 3-0 at Anfield and 5-1 on aggregate.

Uefa handed Liverpool a fine of just £17,600 — £12,000 less than Besiktas received for allowing a CAT to run on the pitch. City will use a different route and have 15 HD cameras filming any potential troublemakers.

City will use a different route to Anfield on Sunday following the violent scenes which greeted their team coach last season. Merseyside police have said they are determined to prevent a repeat of the trouble that occurred before the Champions League match between the two sides on 4 April.

At least one window was smashed on the journey through streets that were filled with thousands of fans, a number throwing flares and smoke bombs, and a replacement vehicle had to be found for the trip home.It is understood City will approach Liverpool’s ground from a different direction to avoid passing the Arkles pub, a popular pre-match meeting point for Liverpool fans.

City have held talks with Merseyside police about the measures which will be in place.

The 4.30pm kick-off is eagerly anticipated with City top of the Premier League and Liverpool second. Extra police will be on duty, it was announced on Wednesday.

Superintendent Dave Charnock said: “Everyone involved is working hard to ensure there is no repeat of the events that occurred outside Anfield before the Champions League fixture between the clubs in April.

“There will be additional officers on duty at the ground, both uniformed and plain clothed, and we will have a city centre policing plan in place throughout the day.”
