Embakasi East legislator Babu Owino (pictured) has attacked universities named after people who passed away, urging high school learners in Siaya County not to envy schooling there.

The former Students Organisation of Nairobi University chairman ostensibly targeting certain local universities named after important personalities who died many years ago, asked students of Raliew Secondary School in Rarienda, Siaya County to disregard the varsities.

Though Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) had the most-sought after academic programmes and registered highest number of fresh students this year, Babu praised University of Nairobi (UoN) that ranked third in enrollment this year.

“Clear your secondary education and then join university. You must come to the University of Nairobi, the only university in Kenya which is not named after a dead person. Egerton and Kenyatta University are named after dead people” he stated.

Babu who accompanied Rarienda MP Otiende Amollo and Siaya Senator James Orengo to the school event advised students to aspire to join UoN, where they can live a ‘rebellious’ lifestyle.

“You must come to the University of Nairobi where we say rule number one is; a comrade is always right. Rule number two is; a comrade is never wrong and if rule number two fails you refer to rule number one,” he encouraged the ululating students.

He advised the students to focus on their education.

He went on: “You know our background. We come from very poor families. Don’t disappoint your MP and parents who sell charcoal and vegetables to educate you”.

Owino previously  hit out at Migori Governor Okoth Obado’s supporters for allegedly dragging opposition leader Raila Odinga’s name into court troubles facing the governor.

Owino wants Obado’s supporters to stop linking Raila to his court case.

The Embakasi East MP wants the governor’s supporters to allow the court to do its work.

“It is unfortunate and wrong for some people to link Raila Odinga or ODM to the troubles facing Migori governor,” he told journalists at his Parliament office in Nairobi on Monday.

Owino said that Obado is fighting a criminal case and not a political case.

“They (Obado’s supporters) should keep Raila’s name out of the case,” he said.

Owino said that the law should be allowed to take its course.

He asked the embattled Governor to fight his case in corridors of justice.

A section of Obado’s supporters have accused Raila of keeping silent on the case.

The supporters also allege that Raila orchestrated Obado’s troubles and have vowed to teach ODM a lesson when time comes.

Obado is remanded at the Nairobi Industrial Area prison pending his fresh bail application on October 8.

The Migori governor along with his two Personal Assistants (PA) Michael Oyamo and Caspal Obiero pleaded not guilty to killing Sharon Otieno.
