Blow for Tottenham HotSpurs as injury rules defender Jan Vertonghen out of action

Jan Vertonghen picked up his hamstring injury in Tottenham's win at Huddersfield last month

Belgium International and Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen will miss up to six weeks with a hamstring injury, according to Belgium boss Roberto Martinez.

Vertonghen missed Spurs’ Champions League defeat to Barcelona in midweek after he was forced during the 3-0 win at Huddersfield last Saturday.

Martinez has now confirmed the centre-back has suffered a hamstring injury which will rule him out for the next four to six weeks.

The 31-year-old looks set to miss some big games for Tottenham including West Ham away, Manchester City at home and the two Champions League matches against PSV Eindhoven.

He has not been included in Belgium’s squad for their upcoming games against Switzerland and the Netherlands with Martinez fearing he will also be unavailable for the international break in November.

His absence is a huge blow for Tottenham having been one of their most consistent performers under Mauricio Pochettino with his standout form last campaign earning him the club’s Player of the Season award.
