Uhuru, Ruto lead nation in mourning Joseph Kamaru

President Uhuru Kenyatta has mourned the passing of veteran Gikuyu pop Benga legend Joseph Kamaru as a great loss to the nation.

President Kenyatta eulogized Kamaru as a great talent whose contribution to the music industry will be greatly missed.

He described the late singer as an icon who played a huge role in promoting Kenyan music.

“It was a blessing for us as a country to have had such a talented artiste who played a big role in promoting the Kenyan brand of music. Indeed we will miss his educative music which was unique in many aspects

He recorded nearly 2,000 songs addressing morality and offering life teachings. The songs stamped his status as a Kikuyu music legend who touched the hearts of music lovers with classic hits such as Gathoni and Charia Ungi,” said Kenyatta.

“Kamaru was a father figure to many musicians, whom he took under his wing, helped them record and publish their songs. His place in Kenya’s folklore is assured. We mourn a great musician. Condolences to his family, friends and the music fraternity. Rest in Peace,” wrote Ruto.

He added that the singer was a father figure to many, informing and entertaining the public through his vibrant songs.

“The Kenyan music industry is poorer following the passing on of legendary musician Joseph Kamaru. The vibrant performer wowed audiences with his lyrics that spoke to morality and life lessons. He generated great vibe, which informed, entertained and celebrated the Kikuyu culture,” noted Ruto.

Opposition chief Raila Odinga stated that Kamaru inspired a generation through music and his death was an end to an era.

“I have learnt of the passing of my friend and legendary musician Joseph Kamaru whose music inspired generations in central Kenya and beyond to reflect deeply on profound political, cultural and social issues. It is truly the end of an era. God rest his soul in peace,” he wrote.

Joseph Kamaru passed away while undergoing treatment at MP Shah Hospital in Nairobi.
