Harry Kane believes he can overtake Lionel Messi as one of the world’s all time greats.

Kane goes head-to-head with the  Barcelona superstar at Wembley and the  Tottenham striker says his target is to beat his goal scoring feats.

Messi has scored 103 Champions League goals in his glittering career but took 23 games to reach ten in the competition while Kane would make it ten in 12 European games if he scores against Barcelona.

Kane said: “He (Messi) set the standard, I think him and Ronaldo have gone above the normal standard that other people have set in the years gone past. When you’re scoring as many goals as he is, 40 or 50, 60 goals a season, as a striker, I want to try and match that, try and do the same. He’s definitely set the standard for the rest of us. He is still is scoring goals, for me it motivates me to get even better and improve and one day score as many if not more than he has. It’s a great test, you know. As players you want to play against the best players in the world and Messi is certainly that. He’s a fantastic player and I’m sure we’ll do our best to stop him adding to that record in England. But we need to focus on ourselves as well, we’ve got some great players, we need to play with energy and come out on top.”

The England Captain  admits that Spurs desperately need a result after losing their Group opener to Inter Milan but called on his team and the fans to summon the spirit of last season when they beat Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.

Kane added: “Obviously we know Barcelona are a fantastic side but we proved last year that we can beat the top teams, especially at home. We’re looking forward to the game but we know it will be a tough test. It’s important, it’s important for us as a team to have that belief going forward. We got off to a great start last season, beating Dortmund at home, not so good to lose to Inter Milan in this campaign but we need to bounce back. We’ve proved we can beat the beat teams around the world and Barcelona are certainly one of the best. We need to play with energy and hopefully take that momentum for the rest of the campaign.I’m sure it will be a full house, we need to get them on their feet, create some chances and hopefully take one to put us in a strong position for the rest of the night. Of course it’s a massive game in the group, you never want to start with two losses. At home, I think we’ve got to be strong if we want to progress. It’s a massive game for us.”
