Sergio Aguero can overtake Wayne Rooney, and even challenge Alan Shearer as the greatest Premier League goalscorer of all. That is the view of Kun’s Manchester City teammate Bernardo Silva, after the Blues legend bagged his 148 league goal in the 2-0 win over Brighton.

After it was announced that Aguero has signed a contract extension to keep him at City for three more years, that goal puts him within 60 of Manchester United ace Rooney, who netted 208. Shearer’s total of 260 is a tougher prospect – but there is nothing to suggest the Argentina star will quit in 2021. As it stands, Aguero is not yet City’s highest league goalscorer – he needs another 11 to overhaul Tommy Johnson and Eric Brook.

But Saturday’s goal propelled him into the top ten of all-time Premier League goalscorers – and he has played less games than the nine players still above him.

Bernardo Silva thinks the next three years will see Aguero cement himself as one of the top three, up there with Rooney and Shearer.

“Sergio is the best scorer in Manchester City’s history,” said Bernardo. “He’s a legend not only for Manchester City but also for the Premier League, if not the best striker in the world then one of the best.

“It’s great to have him with us. Every season he scores 30 goals or more. To have a player like him it helps us so much.

“Everyone hopes he stays. If he reaches that level it will be even better because everyone knows how important Alan Shearer was for English football and for the Premier League.

“I think he can reach it. He’s got the potential. Every season he keeps scoring more and more. We hope he can keep helping us winning more titles here in Manchester.”

Aguero now averages 0.69 goals per game in the league, so he is scoring at a faster rate than Shearer (0.59) and Rooney (0.42).

His chances of overhauling Rooney and challenging Shearer probably rely on him staying fit – last season he scored 21 goals in 25 league appearances.

Neither Shearer nor Rooney managed to score 20-plus league goals in consecutive seasons, but Aguero has managed that feat for the last FOUR campaigns.

This season he already has five goals in seven league games to top the league goalscoring charts.
