UEFA confirms video assistant referee system will be introduced in Champions League from 2019/20 season

The Champions League will introduce video assistant referees (VAR) for the 2019/20 season, UEFA has confirmed.

European football’s governing body revealed VAR would be used from next year’s competition, starting at the play-off stage, as well as at the 2019 UEFA Super Cup, the Euro 2020 finals and the Nations League finals in 2021.

The Europa League will see VAR in use a season after it is introduced to the Champions League, with Europe’s secondary competition getting the technology for 2020/21.

VAR was used to relative success at the 2018 World Cup.

Other UEFA competitions will start to utilise VAR technology over the coming years.

The decision was made by the UEFA executive committee at a meeting in Nyon, Switzerland on Thursday morning.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said: “We are confident that introducing video assistant referees in August 2019 will give us enough time to put in place a robust system and to train match officials to ensure an efficient and successful implementation of VAR in the UEFA Champions League, the world’s flagship club competition.”
