Klopp slams officials after Carabao Cup defeat Vs Chelsea

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has slammed the officials decision to let Chelsea defender Emerson’s equalising goal stand, as his side crashed out of the Carabao Cup.

The Reds’s perfect start to the season was ended in a dramatic match courtesy  of two late goals from Maurizio Sarri’s Blues, with the visitors running out 2-1 winners.

After a quiet first half, Daniel Sturridge opened the scoring with a fine finish, just minutes after missing an open goal.

However, Italian full-back Emerson equalised with around ten minutes left on the clock, marking his first goal for the club with a tap-in from a set piece.

And then with the game drawing to a close, star man Eden Hazard who came on as a substitute,  produced a magic run to beat two defenders and fire in from a tight angle.

Speaking after the game, Klopp admitted he was disappointed with how his side defended.

He said: “We knew how Chelsea wanted to play but we gave them too much space and weren’t compact enough. We still had the bigger chances in the first half.”

And responding to whether he thought it was a free-kick that lead to the equalising goal, he responded:

“No, I don’t think so. the linesman is in a really good position. There was so much in the game. Unfortunately in the end we have to take it. We wanted to win it, we feel unlucky, we hit the bar.”

Emerson’s goal was controversial, with the officials checking via VAR whether several Chelsea players were offside when the free-kick was taken, before giving it in Chelsea’s favour.

And Klopp said he believed it should have been ruled out.

The German Tactician said, “I think the first goal is offside. Three players are offside – two for sure. They watched it and didn’t think it was offside. We have to take it. This is good preparation for Saturday but we have to defend better.”

The two sides meet again on Saturday in the league at Stamford Bridge,

Liverpool still sit top of the Premier League, following Chelsea’s 0-0 draw with West Ham on Sunday.
