heavy rain to start in the coastal region

Coast residents have been warned to be on high alert following expected heavy rains in the region.

The weatherman has said heavy rainfall of between 30mm to 50mm is expected from today to Friday.

The Kenya Meteorological Department said the heavy rains at the coastal strip will be accompanied by strong winds and large waves.

The coastal strip covers Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale counties.

“Residents in all the mentioned areas are advised to be on the lookout for flash floods. People should avoid driving, wading or walking through any fast moving waters. The heavy rains and strong winds off shore may result in storm surges along the coast,” reads the notice in part.

Hence, the weatherman asked fishermen and marine industry players to be alert following the change of the strong winds.

Recently, cases of fishermen reported to have gone missing in the Indian Ocean have been on the rise in Lamu and Mombasa counties.

In the last few months, at least 10 people among them fishermen have gone missing in the sea after their boats capsized. The cases were reported between July and September.
