Court Declines to Stop Police Reforms, Redirects Omtatah’s case

The High Court has Declined to stop Police reforms that had been announced by President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursaday last week.

Activist Okiya Okoiti Omtatah had filed a case in court to bar the reforms from taking effect, which has been directed to be heard on October 8.

Omtatah in his case had claimed that the implementation of the reforms translates to irregular, unlawful and unconstitutional changes.

He wanted the implementation of the new command structure suspended and asked the court to issue a temporary order prohibiting the government from giving effect to the reforms or changes announced by President Kenyatta on Thursday.

Some of the changes the activist wanted temporarily stopped include; changes in the National Police Service, including changes in the structure and command of the National Police Service, the integration of Kenya Police Service, the Administration Police Service, the change of uniforms, the re-branding of colleges, and the introduction of housing allowances for junior officers.
