Why Police Reforms May Fail from taking Effect

On Thursday President Uhuru Kenyatta launched new Police Reforms, among them merging the administrative police with Kenya Police to form a General Duty police.

Much of the changes made by the president in the police sector are scheduled to take effect from December of this year.

However, this may be affected from taking effect as Activist Okiya Koit Omtatah moves to court to challenge the move by President Uhuru Kenyatta to launch reforms in the National Police Service.

According to Omtatah the implementation of the reforms translates to irregular, unlawful and unconstitutional changes.

Omtatah now wants the implementation of the new command structure suspended as he asks the court to issue a temporary order prohibiting the government from giving effect to the reforms or changes announced by President Kenyatta on Thursday.

Some of the changes the activist wants temporarily stopped include; changes in the National Police Service, including changes in the structure and command of the National Police Service, the integration of Kenya Police Service, the Administration Police Service, the change of uniforms, the re-branding of colleges, and the introduction of housing allowances for junior officers.
